Our Institute’s Director, Dr Balázs Bartóki-Gönczy, participated recently in the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva (Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS).
The session brought together representatives of UN Member States to discuss one of the most pressing issues in international space governance: ensuring that outer space remains a peaceful and secure environment. The Geneva meeting demonstrated progress, with participants engaging in substantive exchanges on several key topics.
Among the issues debated were the definition of space weapons, potential verification mechanisms for future agreements and the increasing importance of proximity operations, which present both operational opportunities and security challenges. While significant differences remain among States and consensus on many fundamental issues has yet to be reached, the conference marked an important step forward by fostering meaningful dialogue on the future of space security and arms control.
