Jordi Sandalinas is a Visiting Lecturer at the International Space University (Strasbourg, France), where he teaches space law and astrobiology. He holds a law degree from the University of Barcelona, Spain, and is a Graduate in Space Operations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (USA). Jordi is also a Certified Drone Pilot (AESA) and an Adjunct Professor actively engaged in research on space and drone law, policy, and astrobiology. His areas of expertise include Business Law, Space Law, Drone Law, and International Marine Environmental Law.
In his lecture, Prof. Sandalinas provided an insightful introduction to the fundamental legal frameworks governing space activities. He discussed the first space treaties, and since then the role of soft laws, and the critical functions of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). A key theme of the lecture was the issue of sustainability in space, particularly the importance of reusable rockets and the pressing need for Space Traffic Management in light of the increasing number of satellites and space debris.
Prof. Sandalinas highlighted that marine law might serve as a useful precedent for space law, given the shared concept of the "common heritage of humanity" in both oceans and outer space. Intellectual Property (IP) law also emerged as a relevant topic, as the protection and regulation of innovations used in space present unique challenges.
The lecture concluded with a look at future perspectives and trends in Space Law and Policy.
The event was well-attended, attracting UNISPACE students, members of the scientific student circle (TDK), and those with a keen interest in space law.
