Ludovika Student at the ESA Academy

From the 5th to the 9th of February 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the European Space Agency’s Introduction to Space Law Training Course 2024 in Belgium. The European Space Agency (ESA) organizes similar courses across various scientific disciplines for university students. The program and classes adhered to a rigorous schedule, with 8-9 hours of lectures each day. We started with a session called "Space Law at a Glance" with Alexander Soucek, the Head of the International Division at ESA, where we delved into discussions about UN Space Treaties and other Legal Instruments.

Jenni Tapio also conducted a seminar for us titled "The Journey of a National Space Law."Jenni Tapio serves as a Chief Specialist with a distinct emphasis on space activities, representing Finland at the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) as the head of delegation for the legal and scientific subcommittees, and as an alternate head of delegation in the main committee. Of course there were other outstanding teachers helding lessons for us during the course.

We also visited the ESEC-Redu, the satellite control center, where we gained insights into the operations, although photography inside the facility was restricted. Which was interesting for me, that they have an operational satellite, called Artemis, which currently remains unused. ESA is actively seeking partnerships with companies interested in utilizing this functional satellite.

In addition to lectures, we engaged in negotiation exercises, assuming the roles of different countries in trios. The culminating event on the last day was a simulated General Assembly of the United Nations, where we planned the establishment of an open and global space-based UN Climate Change Observing system through a Framework Agreement. Crafting speeches and proposition papers added a practical dimension to our learning.

Overall, the ESA Introduction to Space Law Training Course was an enriching experience that provided a wealth of knowledge. I highly recommend participating in one of the ESA Academy courses to anyone interested in space-related disciplines.
